Diverse cultural influences have shaped Mexican civilization.
Sophisticated pre-Hispanic native cultures such as the Olmecs
of the Gulf coast with their compelling stone sculpture,
the Teotihuacan muralists, the artistic Mayans militaristic
Toltecs and the Aztecs left magnificent legacies of art
and architecture. The birth of modern Mexico began with
the arrival of the Spanish Conquistadors in the early 16th
century.
